Ramblings and Ideas
Every person who has ever reached for anything bigger than themselves has had a mentor. Someone that they have looked to for inspiration, education, and wisdom. For me that has been Joe McNally. Though I have yet to meet Joe in person he has influenced me more than any other photography instructor or teacher ever could. I can look back at my pictures from a few years ago and tell you the point that I started learning from Joe. It was Joe who taught me not just how to take a picture, but why. It was Joe who taught me that a picture should be more than beautiful, well lit, and properly exposed. Joe taught me it had to tell a story. It had to have meaning otherwise it was just another picture in a long line of pictures. Though my style has developed independent of him, I wouldn’t have ever found it with him. I will always owe gratitude to Joe for sharing his talent with those that are coming behind him.
I was once told it was a mistake to mention another photographer on my blog. That an art director may say “Why hire you when I can hire the one who taught you?” Well if you read this and are thinking should you hire Joe or hire should you hire me, I think I’m in good company. There could be no greater compliment than to be considered for a job next to Joe. So with that being said I thought that since today is Sept. 11th I would turn my usual mid-week blog over to Joe. He has written a special blog today over with photographic/photoshop instructor Scott Kelby. Take a moment to read his story you’ll be glad you did.
